What Is CBN?

The number of known cannabinoids is over a hundred. Each one has its own set of effects. People with limited knowledge of Cannabinol (CBN) have assumed that it is simply a degraded, less potent cannabinoid derived from THC. It’s barely present in cannabis flowers and it is nowhere near as psychoactive as THC. You can find more cannabinol in older, degraded material making anything with its presence less desirable. As a result, this cannabinoid hasn’t received much attention. However, the industry is catching on to the fact that Cannabinol has therapeutic effects that benefit people who are sensitive to THC. Now, more CBN is being found in cannabis products like topicals, edibles, capsules and more.

What is CBN?

CBN is the abbreviation for cannabinol, a non-intoxicating minor cannabinoid that’s naturally found in the hemp plant. Time, oxygenation and the decomposition of THC naturally convert into a new compound, resulting in CBN. Used widely across the world, it’s a unique cannabinoid with therapeutic benefits for sleep and tranquility.

How is it different than CBD?

Although CBN is a byproduct of the degradation of THC, it does not produce the same psychotropic effects. This is often one of the main concerns for people who don’t consume THC, but want to explore ways they can benefit from the natural properties of the hemp plant. Full-spectrum CBD contains <0.3% THC and only trace amounts of CBN. CBD is more commonly used for those trying to relieve physical pain, inflammation, and anxiety.

Alternative Sleeping Aid

When insomnia hits, a common recommendation is to take a melatonin supplement, but what about taking CBN or cannabinol? CBN is growing in popularity. When sleep has the power to affect anything from your mood, concentration, and memory to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity, it’s something none of us want to mess with. The primary effect that consumers have experienced with CBN is sedation. By combining CBD and CBN, there’s potential to reduce lingering pain and anxiety from a long day in addition to lulling you to sleep.

Final Thoughts

The thing that sets cannabinol apart from the other cannabinoids in cannabis is the strong sedative ability. It can also stimulate appetite and curb anxiety without the side effects of some other medications. As more research is conducted on CBN, we may find even more uses for it. Most of the reported effects don’t have much to back them up yet.
